I’m Neetish Basnet, one of the journalists at Fort Worth Report.

I have wanted to be a reporter since I was a boy growing up in Nepal. One of my earliest memories of a news event dates to 2001, when nine members of the Nepalese royal family were massacred in a brutal shooting at the palace. The Nepalese media barely covered the story at the time; anything we learned came from the international press.

At the time, I had recently watched the famous journalism film, “All the President’s Men.” I remember wondering why local reporters didn’t question the authorities and why they didn’t seem to be trying to find and share the truth with our community.

That search for truth and facts inspired me to move to Texas almost 10 years ago and pursue a journalism degree at the University of Texas at Arlington.

I know how important it is for my writing to inform the community and for the community to support our work. One of the reasons I joined Fort Worth Report is that as a nonprofit, independent news source, we will make our coverage available to all for free.

To do that, we are asking for those who value fact-based, non-partisan journalism to support us. As a founding member of Fort Worth Report, you’ll help us produce more high-quality stories about the issues you care about. You’ll help us expand our coverage by hiring more local reporters.

I’ve covered all kinds of stories since my days at UTA’s Shorthorn, writing for several North Texas publications since graduating a few years ago. At Fort Worth Report, my first pieces will examine the upcoming Fort Worth mayoral and city council races, including deeper looks at the positions of candidates Deborah Peoples and Brian Byrd.

I’m eager to know what you’d like to read. Please drop me a line at Neetish.basnet@fortworthreport.org. I look forward to meeting you out in the community.

Thanks,

Neetish
