Martina was born June 30, 1938, in Chihuahua, Mexico, to Dolores and Inez Avila. She lived near downtown Fort Worth shortly after her marriage. Martina and her husband would travel to Indiana and Ohio to harvest vegetables in their first years of their marriage and return to Fort Worth after the harvest. They settled in the southside of Fort Worth and lived in the same house for over 50 years.
