A little over two years ago, my family moved to the Marine Creek community near Lake Worth. It’s a really nice neighborhood. Living in probably every other house is a police officer or some kind of federal agent. It makes you feel safe. It’s pretty quiet and peaceful, and then the lake is about half a mile away.

I walk the dogs on a 6-mile track that goes around the lake. I love taking my 12-year-old daughter out fishing. We go out at 8 or 9 in the morning, and we fish until it gets hot or until she gets bored. She’s caught a few fish out there, and I actually caught a snapping turtle — if that counts. I’ve always been on the water. Both my dad and grandpa were big fishermen. I caught my first fish when I was 2 years old.

It’s amazing out there. There’s constantly people walking around the track. Once you get up off the track a little bit, it’s beautiful. It’s a bunch of trees everywhere. On the other side of the lake is Interstate 820. You can’t see the highway but you can hear it. Down by the lake gives you a little bit of a break, a little peace from the world. But with the sound of cars on the other side, you’re reminded that you’re still in the city.

There’s a little bit of everything here. Closer to 820, there are the big stores — Applebee’s, Chili’s, Target and Walmart. And the further out you get, it gets a little more country. Everything is spread out a little more. One of my favorite locally owned spots is a tire shop, Ernie’s Tire Shop. I work at a steel company in southwest Fort Worth near Crowley, so I get a lot of steel in my tires. They’re friendly, and really quick. It seems like they’re packed all day long. There’s much more to the neighborhood, but I’ve been working so much lately and not going out.

It’s a great area, but it’s definitely expanding. I’m nervous and almost worried to see how much traffic there’s going to be in the next couple of years. They’re building new apartment buildings and there’s constant road construction. More progress, I guess. We moved from Bedford, and it was really congested there. We’re not as congested as Bedford — yet.
