As Rep. Craig Goldman heads into a runoff against John O’Shea in his attempt to Rep. Kay Granger in the U.S. House following her retirement, the race to fill Goldman’s vacancy in the Texas State House wages on.

No candidate earned 50% of the votes plus one in either party.

Cheryl Bean, who owns a home remodeling company and serves on a local charter school board, earned about 49.57% of the vote. John McQueeney, a fast-food franchise owner, had 29.66% and lawyer Leslie Robnett had 20.77%.

On the Democratic side, photographer Diane Symons led with 44.22% of the vote, followed by Carlos Walker, a director of Fort Worth ISD’s Family Action Center with about 34.54%.

High school teacher William Thorburn’s run will end after receiving 21.24%.

The seat, which Republican State Rep. Craig Goldman has held since winning the 2012 election, opened when the representative decided to make his bid for U.S. Rep. Kay Granger’s seat following her retirement.

District 97, which covers Benbrook, White Settlement, Crowley and parts of Fort Worth south of Camp Bowie Boulevard and on the Texas Christian University campus, has been represented by Goldman, a Republican, since he first won the seat in 2012.

The runoff election would take place May 28. The general election will be Nov. 5.
