There is something about May that turns our minds toward taking deep breaths and relaxing, even if a school calendar no longer dictates your schedule as an adult.

Maybe it’s a slow Saturday brunch with the girls, craft coffee — or iced tea — from a new drive-thru spot, or an impromptu outing to find that fun ice cream truck with the kids.

Whether you’re celebrating graduation, the end of a school year, or just this glorious weather we enjoy before things turn ugly, we’ve got some fresh ideas and options for you.

Jumping on the Boozy Brunch Train?

Hash Kitchen, 3240 Tracewood Way Suite 100, is seen on May 22, 2024 in far north Fort Worth. (Camilo Diaz | Fort Worth Report)

Hash Kitchen is the spot you’re looking for if you want a Saturday nightclub vibe on a Sunday morning. This Arizona-based chain, located at 3240 Tracewood Way in north Fort Worth’s Alliance Town Center, serves straight-up hype with a live DJ and Instagrammable brunch dishes. Las Vegas-style day drinking under the disco balls is strongly encouraged. They’re famous for their Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary bar, Mega Glitter Bomb Mimosa and Booze Bags. But don’t forget to eat while you’re drinking. The menu goes on for days, from sweet fixes like Pineapple Upside Down pancakes and Rocky Road souffle cakes to nine different hash options and birria-themed dishes galore.

360 Brunch House comes across as Hash Kitchen’s slightly more refined older sister, the one who takes her craft cocktails seriously and likes to post Instagram reels featuring dramatic dishes set aflame tableside. Flaming Apple Whiskey Cakes and the X.O-Tini (the one with the bubble on top) are bound to set your social media feed on fire. 360 Brunch House was a Dallas-only restaurant until this week. The new Fort Worth Alliance location, 9560 Feather Grass Lane, celebrates its grand opening this week, with plans to expand to Frisco later this year. Both Hash Kitchen and 360 Brunch House feature patios perfectly suited to brunch — and the May weather, thunderstorms aside.

Chasing the Ice Cream Truck?

One of the sweetest ice cream trucks in Tarrant County, Duck Duck Scoop, is opening its very own storefront in Keller later this summer. The mother-and-son duo of Lori and Ben Cuadros launched their ice cream truck business together after a previous business was shut down by the pandemic. They wanted to create a fun experience that made customers smile, and rubber duckies fit the bill perfectly. Choose from Wacky Quacky Sundaes or ice cream by the scoop, all topped with collectible rubber duckies. Find updates on the storefront opening and see where the truck will be appearing next by following on Instagram (@officialduckduckscoop).

Drive-thru Summer Sips?

Let’s be honest: Nothing says summer in Texas like a giant iced tea designed to lower temps from the inside. If you haven’t noticed, the Fort Worth-based HTeaO chain is popping up all over Tarrant County, and the latest installation just opened at 5101 North Tarrant Parkway. A second location in Arlington is coming soon as well, adding to the total of 135 locations listed on the website. With more than 25 fresh-brewed flavors, there’s bound to be something for all the tea lovers out there.

A new craft coffee option is opening soon in southwest Fort Worth opposite Fort Worth Country Day School in the old self-serve car wash building. While you’re not dropping your kids off at school this summer, you can swing through Townes Quality Grinds for hot or cold coffee drinks, teas, lemonades and a substantial food menu. All the coffee served at Townes will be custom blends ground at local 817 Coffee Roasters.
